A smidge of history

Born from a love for the stage and fuelled by the founders (that’s me!) passion for directing musicals in a primary school setting, MAD Club began as an after school club run by yours truly at the small local Primary School in South Somerset where I work. After our debut performance, the club rapidly grew in popularity and although it started out small, the vision for the future of the club was always big.

Now eager for the bigger picture, the grand theatre and the opening curtains, MAD Club ready’s it’s wings and takes the leap into a fully fledged Music and Drama club!

Oh and I should probably take this opportunity to point out that the name MAD Club was simply derived from the initials of ‘Music-And-Drama’ and not from how each session will have the entire group going bonkers. Although this may be making an appearance on the odd warm up exercise…

Our Aim

Our aim for this club is to guide our young actors to build up a great foundation of acting skills and teach a multitude of invaluable life skills that will help them in all areas of what they do and not just on the stage. We will provide a fun and encouraging environment where children can organically learn and develop. The session will work towards creating an exciting and energetic musical performance to showcase to friends and family at the end of the term.

We aim to

  • Build self confidence

  • Develop language and communication skills

  • Nurture creativity and storytelling

  • Enhance stage presence and public speaking

  • Encourage teamwork

  • Form connections and make new friends

  • Put on a cracking play

A brief outline of our sessions.

A Brief Outline of our Performances.

Each session will be 1 hour and 15 minutes long and based around different aspects of acting and the Theatre. After a warm up involving some exciting team games and acting exercises, we will have a look at the theme for the day and then build up our knowledge of that aspect of acting though a blend of games, scenes, tasks and challenges both team-based and independently, to learn and act out to each other. This will build great working friendships between the actors and allow them to help each other achieve their full potential. We will then come back together to share our thoughts on the importance the days focus. After this, we will look at a musical number to work on as an ensemble sharing ideas with the goal of creating a scene around it. We shall then look at and work on scenes from productions and build upon our own scenes too. But we will always try to fit in a fun little acting game at the end of the session!

When the time comes that we start working on our own production, a large segment of each session will be focused around this and the songs we learn will be from the production too. When approaching play date, there may be additional rehearsals at the local theatre so that we can get a sense of new surroundings. These will be communicated in plenty of time with when and where the rehearsals will be and we would hope for full attendance as we all want the best outcome for our productions. The time and date of the Performance will also be sent out along with all details surrounding this. Some of these details include parts, costumes and ticket prices! We want to welcome all family and friends to come and watch but this would depend on where the performance would take place and how many seats that would be available on the day. All this information would also be sent out in plenty of time.
